Seocho Senior Restaurant

A remodelling of a public dining facility for senior residents in Seocho-gu.

The existing space was serviceable but hard to read: low light, tight circulation, and a serving counter that created queues across the main route. The remodel is about legibility more than style.

Moves

Aisles were widened to allow two walking frames to pass. The counter was rotated so that the queue forms along a wall rather than across the room. Contrast between floor and wall finishes was increased to help residents with reduced vision judge the edges of the space.

Light

Fluorescent troffers were replaced with warm indirect lighting and a run of pendants over the long tables — enough to make the room read as a restaurant rather than a canteen.
